Crazy week

March 31-April5, 2008
Well, I thought Isaac was better on Monday because he woke up acting much more energetic and was in a good mood. But then later on in the afternoon his tummy started hurting him again and he hurled all over the bathroom floor downstairs. He seemed to feel better after that, but I still just don’t know what’s up with this crazy virus that they have. Levi had diarrhea all day and then at night when I brushed his teeth, I accidently triggered his gag reflex and he hurled all over the bathroom floor upstairs (I have a lot of laundry to attack now). Then to make things more miserable, half of the vomit ended up on Isaac and when Isaac tried to step down off of the tooth brushing stool, he slipped on the vomit and landed hard on the floor. James was out of town, so it was just me and all of the drama and it was all I could do to laugh not to cry. Isaac then decided that his foot was broken—just like the Curious George story and he wanted me to put a cast on it. So I wrapped a rag around his foot and told him it was a cast and luckily that seemed to satisfy him. Then both boys zonked out hard. I need to go zonk out too.
So today (Tuesday) is the first day in 5 days that I haven’t had to deal with vomit or diarrhea. I really hope that we’re turning the corner on this wacky virus that we’ve all been suffering from. Isaac woke up desperate to make chocolate chip cookies for breakfast. I took that as a sign that he was feeling better, but I made him settle for rice crispies.
The Helgueras (our neighbors) are going to rent our house for the next year, so that’s a huge relief because the thought of showing the house with our stuff in it would be a disaster. Our Ikea second hand furniture and kids stuff everywhere doesn’t exactly look classy. I just feel like it’s a huge blessing that they want to rent the house. Now we’ll just have to start praying for a miracle to happen next year so that we can rent it or sell it. Right now we have to focus our efforts on getting the basic stuff fixed up and sorting out all of our junk. Easier said that done right?
Well, I thought that the vomit days were over, but Isaac woke up screaming and vomiting at 10:30 on Wednesday night and it was pretty messy. Poor kid. I had to completely change all of the bedding, try to scrub stuff out of the carpet, bathe him, re-pajamify him, and read a bunch more stories and snuggle him to sleep. I really hope that this is the last of it. I’m taking Levi in for his 18 month check up tomorrow so I’ll see if I can squeeze in an appointment for Isaac to see what’s up.
I had a lady from Guatemala help me out with the kids on Wednesday and I loved listening to Isaac speak in Spanish with her. Very cute. When he knows that someone doesn’t speak English, he goes whole hog into Spanish mode.
Levi is obsessed with the computer and constantly wants to watch family videos on Picassa.
Well, by the time we made it to the pediatrician on Thursday, both boys were definitely over the stomach flu, but Levi still had some rashes and chaffed skin at the joints so I asked the doctor about that. She said that Levi has mild excema which means that his skin is super sensitive and she prescribed a steroid ointment cream for him. I still need to pick it up from the pharmacy, but hopefully it will help him to feel better.
We saw a snake swimming in the pond at the “jungle” audobon society park that we go to and when I pointed it out to Isaac, he said, “no mom, that’s not a snake, that’s an eel!”
I left both of the boys with Eloisa (our Norwegian neighbor’s nanny) on Tuesday morning and when I picked the boys up, Eloisa said that she didn’t realize that Isaac spoke Spanish so well. I asked her what happened and she stold me that she had to take away a toy from Levi because he was putting the battery in his mouth, and when she took it away from Levi, Isaac came up to her and said, “Asi no se hace Eloisa—no te portes mal con los niños chiquitos!” She got a good laugh out of that.
Levi’s hair is getting pretty long and he’s been mistaken for a girl a couple of times this week. I still can’t bring myself to cut it though—the golden curls in the back are just too cute.
This week Isaac seemed to have the realization that he was bilingual. He said, “mom, I can speak Spanish!” then I taught him how to say “hablo español!” He’s been excited about translating the words to English songs lately. We were listening to a song that started out “hello neighbors” and Isaac said, “mom sing it in Spanish” and then he proceeded to sing himself “hola vecinos!” Very cute.
Natasha stayed with us Friday night because she was flying to Idaho on Saturday and she offered to babysit for us. It was so nice to have a night out. We went to the Kasra Persian grill and then hung out at Barnes and Nobles and drank hot chocolate while we looked at reviews of MBA programs. Persian food is amazing.
Isaac’s favorite story of the week was, “We went to the Helguera’s house and Levi gobbled up the brownie and said, “Ahh!”

Timo and Julia!!

March 24-March 30, 2008
When you ask Levi questions, he’ll now respond “yeah” or “no”—its amazing how much he understands.
Levi is picking up new words every day now. He can say book, duck, dog, stuck, and music now. He really enjoys music a lot and he’s becoming like Isaac now in the car—he wants to hear songs he likes repeated. This can get a little tricky when both boys want to listen to different songs. Now I have two competing disc jockeys.
Both boys got sick with a stomach virus this week—lots of vomiting and laundry. Isaac had a worst bought of vomiting than Levi and he got so bad I finally called the nurse at the doctor’s office and she called in some anti-nausea medicine for Isaac that helped him keep fluids down. What a huge blessing.
When James was on a walk with the boys on Wednesday, Isaac said, “Papa what happens if we hit and push our friends?” James said “If we hit and push, then our friends will be . . “ James was waiting for Isaac to fill in the right word, but Levi beat him to it and said, “sad.” He’s a sharp little guy.
Uncle Timo and Aunt Julia Nuttall came to visit on Friday and Saturday and the boys were really happy to see them. Isaac wanted to play all of the games with Timo that he used to play with him when they were living here like elevator, jumping on the bed, and flying spaceship. He also played Dora with them at the park and showed off his new imaginative playing skills. We went to Red Robin on Saturday and we let Isaac open up a couple of his birthday presents that Timo and Julia had brought from Grandma. He was very excited about the “magic garden,” and she gave him some cool clothes too, but ofcourse he was more interested in growing the magic garden so we went home and did the science experiment and it worked really well. Crystals blossoming on “trees” and “flowers”—very fascinating.
I took the boys to McDonalds earlier in the week and when we were about to sit down when we noticed some teenagers being really loud and using foul language close to where we usually sit. Isaac looked at me and said, “mom, are those bad people?” I wanted to say “yes” but since I wasn’t sure how much we were being overheard I just said we need to be nice to everybody. I think its amazing how discerning kids are.
Well, we’re still really worried about our boys. It’s Sunday night and Isaac is listless with no appetite and he’s just not acting like himself at all. Levi is perky, but he’s still vomiting and has bad diarrhea. James and I have also felt pretty wonky and even though we haven’t thrown up. We have barely any appetite—all I’ve had today is 3 slices of bread and some water. Not good.

Here we have a few attempts at family pics.

James and David Hernandez

James had a chance to see one of his childhood friends from Mexico. They went to 7th grade together and had lost touch afterwards and David found James through searching for his name on the internet. We met at the park for pizza and they had fun swapping life stories. His nickname is "Goofy" and Isaac loved saying "Donde esta Goofy?"

Easter Egg Hunt Time

On Saturday we had a little Easter egg hunt with a couple of friends from church over at the Ray Miller park on Eldridge. Sarah Marzarella’s mom and sister went over early to hide the eggs in the “forest” and Rocco, Dallin, Isaac, and Levi all had a blast looking for the eggs. Levi actually caught on really quickly and starting following everyone’s example and loading his basket with eggs. We were amazed that there weren’t any sharing crisis moments. James had to travel on Sunday, but we still had a great Easter because Alisa and Lonnie Mercer invited us over for dinner and the boys love being over there. She also invited another family—Erin and Matt (they have a baby girl and a toddler named Ian). Erin and Alisa grew up together in California. After feeding the fish, and throwing way too many rocks in the water we did an egg hunt for them and Ian. Isaac pillaged Ian’s basket when he wasn’t looking, so we had to have a little talk about not taking other people’s eggs. Levi is very observant. At church, Carmen lets me bring him to nursery (even though its still a month early) and I stay the first hour to help out. Levi watches what the other kids do and mimics pretty well. Two little girls were pretending to feed a baby with spoons and he joined right in. Isaac was being really cute when we got back from the Mercer’s on Sunday. He just wanted to speak in Spanish and he was calling me “mama gallina” and wanted me to call him “bebe pollito.” I’m so happy that he can speak Spanish. Even though he resists sometimes, a lot of times he craves it and has fun with it. Erin heard Isaac speak Spanish and said, “congratulations, your son is bilingual.” I thought well, he’s not potty trained yet and he’s got other issues, but hey I’m glad that I can take pride in the fact that I’ve taught him and continue to teach him two languages. It’s a constant effort, but its fun to see the results.

Chocolate bunnies for breakfast

Yes, the boys thoroughly enjoyed their chocolate bunnies from Grandma for breakfast. We're just glad Easter is once a year and that its six months apart from Halloween.

Zoo time

March 17-March 23, 2008
Levi is hooked on books now. He wants to be just like his big brother and he’ll pick up a book and start backing up and plunk himself down in my lap to read. His absolute favorite is Goodnight Gorilla. He really likes pointing out the moon and pointing out all of the animals at the zoo and saying “night night!”
We went to the zoo on Wednesday for playgroup which ended up being kind of insane because its spring break and everyone else seemed to have the same idea. The zoo was very crowded, but the kids didn’t seem to mind. We brought our neighbor Claire with us and Isaac had a ball running around with her and I could focus more on Levi. At the petting zoo Isaac actually wanted to pet the goats. He wasn’t afraid of them! Yeah. He seems to be afraid of too many things lately. It’s nice when he can just relax and have fun.
